Predatory Asian Hornet

Writer's picture: maggie097maggie097

Although we have native hornets that do no damage, the Asian is predatory and they hunt out bees, follow them to the hive, then hover outside catching the bees, killing them and taking them back to their nest. They can quickly wipe out a whole colony, hence the concern about them becoming widespread in this country and the impact upon pollination of our food crops. You certainly wouldn’t want to be stung by one!

Bees can deal with our native hornet but have no defence against the larger invader. PH
